Fondly referred as the "Pearl of the Andaman" for its beautiful scenery with forest covered hillsides and white sandy beaches. The island is about the size of Singapore and has a busy provincial capital - Phuket town. Although small, it has modern hypermarkets, leisure facilities and local markets. It takes about 1 hour to drive from the airport to the south of the island.
Many visitors head for the most popular beaches - Patong, Kata and Karon, situated on the west coast, which have a good range of accommodation and entertainment. The quieter resorts tend to lie to the north and south of these areas with less facilities outside the hotels and a more sedate nightlife.
